MANCHESTER, England, September 26 (Reuters) –

Casemiro scored one goal and set up another as hosts Manchester United warmed up their League Cup defense with a 3-0 home win over top  rivals Crystal Palace in the third round on Tuesday.


 While Erik Ten Hag's side put a difficult start to the season behind them and won comfortably  at Old Trafford, Premier League sides Wolverhampton Wanderers and Luton Town were beaten by their lower league opponents.


 Wolves took a 2-0 lead then lost 3-2 to Championship (second tier) high flyers Ipswich Town, while Premier League newcomers Luton were beaten 1-0 at Exeter City, from League One (third tier). ).


 Exeter were kept to 10 men after Demetri Mitchell was sent off for a second yellow card five minutes after scoring an 83rd minute goal.


 Vincent Kompany's Burnley, who are yet to win in the Premier League  this season, defeated League Two (fourth place) rivals Salford City 4-0 against the second-placed team.  Palace lost goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who was signed from United in August, in the 19th minute of his debut for the club  when he appeared to strain his right leg after what  looked like a simple long kick .


 He was replaced by Sam Johnstone, another  Manchester United academy graduate, who won the ball out of the net two minutes later when Diogo Dalot cut in for Alejandro Garnacho to sweep in with his right foot.


 Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who had a fine night, made it 2-0 in the 27th minute when he rose inside the box to curl a close-range header into the far corner from Mason Mount's  corner. .


 Anthony Martial scored the third in the 55th minute with his first goal of the season when he took advantage of poor defending to meet Casemiro's cross at the far post and fire past Johnstone.


 It was the  only match of the evening between the two top-flight clubs  and they will meet  in the Championship at Old Trafford on Saturday.  Morocco international loan player Sofyan Amrabat made his first appearance for United at left-back after joining from Fiorentina.


 “I think it was a perfect evening,” the defensive midfielder told broadcaster Sky Sports.


 "I told the coach I play where you need me, whether it's goalkeeper, I play where I can help the team. "Today I was dropped back but I have a slightly free role. "


 Jack Taylor scored the winner in the 58th minute  for Ipswich, who reached the last 16 for the first time since 2010, with a long-range shot after Freddie Ladapo equalized in the 39th minute and Omari Hutchinson started the counterattack in the 28th minute.


 Wolves took the lead in the 4th minute thanks to Hwang Hee-Chan, while Toti Gomes doubled the score in the 15th minute. Championship side Middlesbrough won 2-0 in League Two at Bradford City and League Two Mansfield Town beat League One Peterborough United 3-1 on penalties after the match finished 2-2.


 Sutton United, the bottom team, lost 1-2 at League One Port Vale.
